Wrexham charity calls on community to play starring role in its future

A Wrexham tourist attraction is inviting North Wales residents to have their say in shaping the future of its engagement activity.

Xplore! Science Discovery Centre is calling on local people to pitch ideas for sustainably focused exhibits, in a bid to encourage a deeper sense of community involvement within the city.

The charity, which organises science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) orientated workshops and shows, wants to hear what visitors would like to see next at its site on Henblas Street.

Through the Shared Prosperity Fund, it will launch the new experiences to add to more than 80 interactive activities within its exhibition space and is holding three drop-in focus groups for attendees to pitch, discuss, or even draw their vision.

Following the announcement for the ‘Parks and Wrex’ development outside the former hippodrome site, where Xplore! has previously held events, the organisation aims to learn what will further engage local people on the high street.

Community fundraising and outreach coordinator Clair Griffiths, who is leading the sessions, said: “We’re seeing so much enthusiasm about creating a buzz around Wrexham, and we’re always keen to spread this further into the community.

“We can’t wait to welcome residents and allow them to voice what they think the future of our centre should look like, especially as we are placing the environment at the forefront.”

The organisation has previously shown its commitments to climate literacy through the creation of decarbonisation workshops with Wrexham Council, empowering more than 600 pupils throughout 2023.

Clair added: “It’s crucial to drive these initiatives forward through carefully listening to our visitors, as sustainability means something different to everyone.

“For example, the new exhibit could be a game made from fully recyclable resources or materials obtained from local businesses.

“If you are bubbling with ideas, or curious to chat through how you can get involved, don’t hesitate to drop in for a chat.”

The sessions will take place between 10am-12pm on 22 and 29 November, and 6 December, and will be open to all ages.

Formally known as Techniquest Glyndŵr, the centre has celebrated its 20th anniversary this year and has won a Business Learning accolade at the Wrexham Business Awards 2023 for its work to engage the next generation in STEM.
